Name: Matt Tuomi
Number of Years in Education: 17
Background: I was born and raised in the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. I attended Lutheran schools from Preschool all the way through college. I graduated from Concordia University – Chicago, in 2003, with a Bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education-Biology. My first teaching assignment was at Peace Lutheran, Fort Lauderdale, FL. I was the athletic director while teaching middle school science and math.
While completing my first year, I was issued a call from Walther Lutheran high school. At Walther, I taught chemistry, AP chemistry, and Earth science for 13 years. I was the chair of the science department for 7 of the years. In my time as department chair, we added some classes such as Integrated science and AP chemistry. The Integrated science course raised the ACT average of the school every year, and in AP chemistry we obtained as high a pass rate of 90% at one point. In addition to this, I mentored various first-year teachers in the science department, ran our Grade School Science League, taught ACT Prep classes, and helped guided students through the process of becoming science majors.
Outside of the classroom, I was also very involved with the school. I coached baseball for 13 years, 7 of them as a varsity head coach. In those 7 years, we won 4 regional titles, finished in the “Sweet 16” 3 times, and took 2nd in the state in 2011. I started the “Walther Classic” in 2005, which was initially a fundraiser for Hurricane Katrina victims and continues today as a scholarship fund. I enjoyed attending the many different concerts, sporting events, and drama productions that Walther has hosted throughout the years.
In my current position, I serve as the principal, at Zion-Concord Lutheran school. I teach a 3rd/4th-grade science lab once a week. I also run the Minecraft club, Frisbee Golf Club, and Mini-Golf Club for our students.
Outside of my passion for education, I also enjoy spending time on the water, in the Northwoods of Canada and Wisconsin.
I currently reside in Melrose Park with my wife, Gretchen, and our son Nathan (12). We attend Zion Lutheran Church.
